“What a delight it is to see By The Sea return as a Deluxe Collector’s Edition. I have a sentimental attachment to this collection because I used it in my audition video for the Graphic 45 design team back in 2014. Today’s project is a tag album combining the large ivory tags and regular red policy envelopes. Tags and envelopes are attached to a hidden hinge binding made of ivory cardstock secured to a chipboard spine. The pages are loaded with photo mats and feature interactive elements such as side-loading raised pockets with pull-out cards for journaling, and the policy envelopes are a great place to store memorabilia or more photos. This album would be great for summer photos at the beach, vacation photos, or to display cruise memories.” ~Annette

By the Sea Mixed Media Album

By Kathy Clement

"What’s your happy place?  The beach is mine. I love the sound of the waves hitting the shore, the wind whipping through my hair, and warm sand between my toes makes me supremely happy.  Graphic 45’s gorgeous By the Sea Deluxe Collector’s Edition captures all the things I love about the ocean.  So when I was invited to create a mini album for Creativation 2019, I knew I wanted to use this glorious collection.

The base of my project is a Graphic 45 Staples Kraft Mixed Media Album.  To mimic the look of waves on the shore, I created a shaker element as the focal for the album.  This is probably the easiest type of shaker to create. Just cut clear acrylic cardstock the same size as your focal image.  Then use a sewing machine to stitch around the perimeter of the image. Leave a 2” opening where you can insert your shaker elements.  Then stitch the opening closed.

TIP: Back your shaker pouch image with a couple of layers of cardboard packaging material to really make it stand out on your project.

These blue Graphic 45 flowers are just the perfect shade for my beachy album.  After arranging them in a cascade, I tucked in a few little metal beach charms that I found in my stash.

TIP: For a quick shabby chic finish, paint metal charms with ivory chalk paint.  When dry, use a blending tool to add a complementary color of Decades Ink over the top.  For this project, I used Decades Bon Voyage Blue.

No day at the beach is complete without hunting for a few seashells!  I fussy cut images from the signature page then layered them along with some fussy cut postage stamps in the upper left-hand corner.  Then I added some real beach treasures from my stash to complete the vignette. For extra fun, I sprinkled real beach sand into puddles of dries clear adhesive in with the shells.

The spine is decorated with ribbons, more painted metal beach charms, a Graphic 45 Shabby Chic Clock Key and an image that I cut down to fit the spine.

The inside pages are filled with pockets, tuck spots, pull outs, and folio inserts.

TIP:  Make a quick and easy pocket for the inside front cover by cutting your designer paper 3” longer than the height of the page.  Then score on the long side, fold and adhere. Almost instant pocket!

I wanted to carry the fun shaker theme from the cover throughout the album.  So I stitched the vellum sheets to the heavy kraft cardstock sheets, filled them with the sequin mix and then adhered an image in the center.  This adds such a playful feel to the album!

I chose to remove several pages from the album.  I used these to create 4” x 6” folio inserts for the pocket pages.  Simply cut off the punched edge of page, trim the page to measure 8” x 6”, then score on the long side at 4”.  Instant folio insert. Line the cover and

interior with scraps.

TIP:  You can add a simple mixed media water effect to the vellum pages with your Decades Bon Voyage Blue Ink Pad.  Lightly brush the pad directly onto the vellum sheet, spritz lightly with water to encourage the ink to spread.  Dry with a heat tool.

TIP: Adhere the sides and bottom of two ivory pages together to create a pocket.  Then insert a folded strip of paper for a fun interactive element.

TIP:  Border strips make great shallow pockets.  For this page, I trimmed the postage stamps to the width of my page.  Then place a thin bead of adhesive on the bottom and sides and adhere to the base of the page.

TIP: Side pockets can be made the easy way, too.  Cut your paper 2” longer than the width of the page.  Score, fold and adhere for a super fast side pocket.

I’ve prepared a quick video tour with tips and tricks so you can see how all the elements work together.
